Welcome

Ever notice that the world is full of experts who have never actually done what they are "experts" at?

Many a business professor has never actually managed a business. Most business courses stress defining business terms but never actually teach the concepts of running a business.

This blog hopes to teach some of the terms and, at the same time, give some examples and lessons on running a business.

There will also be reviews of books on business listed here. Sometimes companies give me books to review. Regardless of where I get the book to review, I will give my honest opinion. If I was given the book to review I will always disclose that in the review.

I seek to start posting on 02 January 2012. Some of the posts will be recycled from some of my other blogs.

The reader should know that there is no one “Right Way” to conduct business that will apply in all situations. This blog is meant as a place to start. It is hoped that you will perform further research and consult professionals experienced in your particular business before making any important decisions.

Prayer Request

I have a prayer request. Saturday one of our customers died. His name was Alvin. When you are a part of a small group of family-owned convenience stores like Suzanne and I are your customers become a part of your family.

In a very real way, the family we work for is very much a part of our family even though we aren’t related by blood. We are from different parts of the world and we have different faiths. We still became family.

A good bit of the time working in these seven stores is not like work, but more like waiting for friends and family to drop by for a visit. Some stay and chat for a while and others drop in and drop right back out. Still, we are all part of a family.

Alvin died. He and his wife, Ms. Lynette came in the store all the time. Customers like Alvin and Ms. Lynette don’t need to tell the clerk what they want to purchase. The clerk has served them so many times that he instinctively knows what they want and can conduct a conversation and handle the transaction at the same time almost by rote.
Suzanne and I have been a part of this chain of stores for over six years now and it seems that more and more here lately we are losing friends.

Please pray for Alvin’s family during this time of grief. Please continue to pray for Danny and Leigh, Ms. Barbara, and Grandma Dorothy.

I haven’t been able to post as regularly as I should here lately. It seems that everything is backing up at work. We had some state mandated training that had to be done by today. We got it done. We also had some other concerns taking our attentions off from the main business.

The Good Lord willing, I will be able to get back on track posting soon.
