Welcome

Ever notice that the world is full of experts who have never actually done what they are "experts" at?

Many a business professor has never actually managed a business. Most business courses stress defining business terms but never actually teach the concepts of running a business.

This blog hopes to teach some of the terms and, at the same time, give some examples and lessons on running a business.

There will also be reviews of books on business listed here. Sometimes companies give me books to review. Regardless of where I get the book to review, I will give my honest opinion. If I was given the book to review I will always disclose that in the review.

I seek to start posting on 02 January 2012. Some of the posts will be recycled from some of my other blogs.

The reader should know that there is no one “Right Way” to conduct business that will apply in all situations. This blog is meant as a place to start. It is hoped that you will perform further research and consult professionals experienced in your particular business before making any important decisions.

Hurricane Harvey: Walmart Dropped the Ball

We live on the Gulf Coast of Texas.  We actually live in one of the counties (Wharton County) that is currently being impacted by Hurricane Harvey, which was downgraded to a tropical storm.

What amazes me is how a store like Walmart, who supposedly has the most sophisticated logistics system in existence, drops the ball so often when it comes to having merchandise in stock.

Normally, it is just a nuisance to shop at Walmart and find out they can't even keep their own brand of water in stock.  For them to be out of stock of every brand and type of water in the days leading up to a major hurricane, like Harvey, can be just plain deadly.

We went to our local Walmart on the Thursday before Harvey was predicted to make landfall early the following Saturday morning.  They were out of ALL types of water except for 24 bottles of Perrier, which were priced at $12.98 for 12 bottles according to the shelf tag.

Meanwhile our local H.E.B. grocery store had pallet upon pallet of water and all other supplies people needed to weather the approaching storm.  Dollar General had water, too.

You would think that this is Walmart's first rodeo.  Every year from June to December is hurricane season.  You would think that Walmart would have at least one person who would say, "Hurricane season is coming up, we should stock up on water, batteries, and other things people will need." But, this doesn't happen.

The last case of water we bought from Walmart does not expire for over a year and a half. You would think they could stock enough water in their warehouses in storm prone areas to be able to handle a storm.  But, they don't.

What does H.E.B. and Dollar General know that Walmart doesn't? Are they simply better merchants?

Think of all the sales on water, batteries, etc., that Walmart missed by being out.  There really is no excuse for this level of incompetence.

First, Walmart fires people for being old.  Then, they force everyone else who works for them to work on Thanksgiving.  Now, they won't even keep water in stock when they could sell millions of dollars worth of it.  Who is running the store?  Have they lost control of the ship?

Maybe it is time for them to buy United Airlines and become officially the most clueless company ever to exist anywhere.

What do you think?

  1. Our Walmart is always out of litter on weekends and many other items. I would have thought they would plan in your area for bottled water and batteries, etc.

    1. You would think they would want to capitalize on all the potential business. I think they need to get back to basics. Have a great week.
