Usually I, David, zone out when I hear the word creative.  It has been said that I don’t have an artistic bone in my body and that I have never had an original idea.

However, if I had zoned out when I was reading Creative Economy Entrepreneurs: From Startup to Success: How Startups in the Creative Industries are Transforming the Global Economy by Alice Loy and Tom Aageson, I would have missed a lot.

This book works well for creatives as well as for budding entrepreneurs of any genre.  The book would be interesting to those into business history as well.

This book should be read by government officials around the world, no matter what level of government they are in.

The Intelligent Investor: The Classic Text on Value Investing by Benjamin Graham ISBN: 0-06-075261-0

It all started with Security Analysis.  Then, the undisputed master of investing, Benjamin Graham, followed up with The Intelligent Investor.

Often times we are sent books to review that we want to just be finished with.  Those books don’t get a review. Books like The Intelligent Investor are the type we love to read and review.  This is one of those books that you want to savor. You want to take in every word.

This book was written in 1949 and speaks of real world examples from that time.  It is interesting to see how right Graham was in his predictions. He actually made no predictions.

What he gave us was insights.  He gave us good, common sense ideas of how to value companies.  He wrote about the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P).  At that time, A&P was the largest retailer in the world. He also spoke about the soon to rise star, Sears.

As we know, both these stars were snuffed out, not by bad stocks, but by bad management.  Both A&P and Sears failed or are failing, in the case of Sears, because management took their eyes off the ball, so to speak.

K-Mart, which is owned by Sears, Sears, and A&P forgot who their customers were and focused instead on the bottom line.

Benjamin Franklin said, “Take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves.”  This is true in retail as well. If you take care of your customers, the bottom line will take care of itself.

This 320 page book is more like a course in life management than any we have seen.

If you take Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover, stir in a little of Norman Vincent Peale’s Power of Positive Thinking, add a pinch of The Autobiography of Ben Franklin, and then top it with The Millionaire Next Door, you have the recipe for 5 Day Weekend.

5 Day Weekend: Freedom to Make Your Life and Work Rich with Purpose by Nik Halik and Garrett B. Gunderson takes your typical book on money management and stands it on its ear.  

In these pages one will find tons of ideas about how to make more money through active methods so that one can then make more money passively.  This is one of those books you wish you had read when you were younger.

Nik Halik has an engaging writing style that makes the book very readable and enjoyable and, if you aren’t careful, you just might learn something. We give it all five stars.

You may be thinking that 5 Day Weekend is just another book on finance; you would be wrong.  Instead, it is about living the life you want to lead. Readers learn about goal setting, planning, budgeting, and more.

We read and review many books on business on our blogs. We also read and review books on genealogy and family history.  Without even trying, Give to Get: A Senior Leader's Guide to Navigating Corporate Life by Vishal Agarwal brings the two together, in a roundabout way.

With family history and genealogy, most people want to know about the dashes in a family.  You probably know that the dash is how people lived their lives between their birth and death dates, the how and why they lived their lives the way they did.

Give to Get talks about something Zig Ziglar talked about many times over the years: How you can get anything you want in life IF you just help enough other people get what they want.

This book is a quick read, but it takes on several issues that are important to anyone in the C-suite, as well as that new branch manager of the local company.  

Without coming out and saying it, Agarwal reminds us that it isn’t the people at the top who run the company. Most of the time, it is the people on the front line who run the company. Tapping into their strengths and getting to know what makes them tick is the key to a successful company.
