Welcome

Ever notice that the world is full of experts who have never actually done what they are "experts" at?

Many a business professor has never actually managed a business. Most business courses stress defining business terms but never actually teach the concepts of running a business.

This blog hopes to teach some of the terms and, at the same time, give some examples and lessons on running a business.

There will also be reviews of books on business listed here. Sometimes companies give me books to review. Regardless of where I get the book to review, I will give my honest opinion. If I was given the book to review I will always disclose that in the review.

I seek to start posting on 02 January 2012. Some of the posts will be recycled from some of my other blogs.

The reader should know that there is no one “Right Way” to conduct business that will apply in all situations. This blog is meant as a place to start. It is hoped that you will perform further research and consult professionals experienced in your particular business before making any important decisions.

Give to Get: A Senior Leader's Guide to Navigating Corporate Life by Vishal Agarwal ISBN: 978-1-61961-828-2

We read and review many books on business on our blogs. We also read and review books on genealogy and family history.  Without even trying, Give to Get: A Senior Leader's Guide to Navigating Corporate Life by Vishal Agarwal brings the two together, in a roundabout way.

With family history and genealogy, most people want to know about the dashes in a family.  You probably know that the dash is how people lived their lives between their birth and death dates, the how and why they lived their lives the way they did.

Give to Get talks about something Zig Ziglar talked about many times over the years: How you can get anything you want in life IF you just help enough other people get what they want.

This book is a quick read, but it takes on several issues that are important to anyone in the C-suite, as well as that new branch manager of the local company.

Without coming out and saying it, Agarwal reminds us that it isn’t the people at the top who run the company. Most of the time, it is the people on the front line who run the company. Tapping into their strengths and getting to know what makes them tick is the key to a successful company.

Five Star Review

Give to Get is very well-written and easy to read.  We give it all five stars. We think this will make an excellent addition to any leader’s library.

Book Review: Strengthen Your Business: Fail-Proof Strategies from the Man Who Has Rescued 77 Businesses by Robert Thomas Bethel

If you are like us, you have read fiction books that you enjoyed so much you just did not want them to end.  You develop a relationship with the main character and you feel you understand them.  We have had this happen countless times with good mystery books.

However, we have NEVER had that happen with a business book.  By now we have read hundreds, if not thousands, of business books.  With each one, we learned a little more about how to conduct business.  And, apt as not, we have learned what NOT to do in business.

The book Strengthen Your Business: Fail-Proof Strategies from the Man Who Has Rescued 77 Businesses by Robert Thomas Bethel is absolutely the best book we have read on the subject of business turn arounds.

We aren’t given a lot of business theory or analogies based on mythology.  We are given real-world examples of how the author, Bethel, has turned around 77 businesses.

We learn how he failed in business and why he failed in business.  Nowhere in Strengthen Your Business does the author blow his own horn.  Instead, he gives the credit where he feels it is due.

The author tells us how to get the best out of employees and how to use them to the best of their abilities, and have them be happy to be part of the solution.

We only have five stars to give to any book. So, not only will we give all five stars, we are going to throw in a bag of Chester’s Cheese Puffcorn and a Diet Coke.

Five Star Review

This is real-world business stuff with real-solutions, not a bunch of touchy feely, sing songs and cry solutions like we see on one popular television show.

If you are trying to save a business and you only have time to read one book, this is the one to choose. It is one you just can’t put down, if you are interested in business.
