Welcome

Ever notice that the world is full of experts who have never actually done what they are "experts" at?

Many a business professor has never actually managed a business. Most business courses stress defining business terms but never actually teach the concepts of running a business.

This blog hopes to teach some of the terms and, at the same time, give some examples and lessons on running a business.

There will also be reviews of books on business listed here. Sometimes companies give me books to review. Regardless of where I get the book to review, I will give my honest opinion. If I was given the book to review I will always disclose that in the review.

I seek to start posting on 02 January 2012. Some of the posts will be recycled from some of my other blogs.

The reader should know that there is no one “Right Way” to conduct business that will apply in all situations. This blog is meant as a place to start. It is hoped that you will perform further research and consult professionals experienced in your particular business before making any important decisions.

Book Review: Project Unthinkable: A Doctor's Gamble to Save Millions of Lives by Derek Yach ISBN: 978-1-988025-30-8

I would have to say that Project Unthinkable: A Doctor's Gamble to Save Millions of Lives by Derek Yach is probably the most hope filled book I have ever read.

If everything works out the way the author Derek Yach seems to think it will, we will soon all be living in a smoke-free world.

I have to admit, if I were browsing a book store or searching through Amazon, I probably would pass this book by.

If I had passed up on reading this book, I would have missed reading a wealth of information that I would not have received anywhere else.

I really don’t know how the WHO works, but I know the FDA is made up of a bunch of goons that couldn’t regulate a dog fight.  I say this because they won’t allow natural foods and supplements to be sold unless they are willing to bow down and say that the only treatment for cancer is chemotherapy and radiation.

These same cancers are caused because the FDA does not do its job to protect our food supply.  Case in point, GMO isn’t as benign as it sounds. We are sent countless books to review that are written by top doctors in their fields.  These books tell us that GMO means that the chemical known as Roundup, an herbicide, is grown into our foods. And the FDA doesn’t think that it is important for us to know which of our foods are GMO?

The FDA didn’t even look at mesh implants before they were approved for implanting in humans.

Now, Project Unthinkable tells us there is hope for us all.  The hope doesn’t come from government regulations of tobacco, but from one of the largest tobacco companies in the world.

This book is very well written and, believe it or not, it is very entertaining.  You will learn a lot about what you didn’t know you didn’t know. This is the kind of book that you will be surprised you found to be so interesting you just can’t put it down.

Always Welcome: Nine Decades of Great Friends, Great Times & (Mostly) Great Deals by Welcome W. Wilson Sr. ISBN: 978-1-942945-50-5

One would have to say that this book arrived in the most unusual way. We received a knock on our door and found the postal carrier with a postage due package.  It was this book. While my wife scraped up the $1.12 to pay the postage due, I joked with the mail lady that if they were hoping for a good review, they weren’t starting out on the right foot.

Actually, the only reason that part appears in this review at all is because we are required by the FTC to disclose the details of any item we receive for review that is free or at a discount price.  We have no idea how to go about disclosing that, other than to tell the truth of the matter.

Always Welcome: Nine Decades of Great Friends, Great Times & (Mostly) Great Deals by Welcome W. Wilson Sr. is a very well-told story of the life of a man with an unusual name with a flair for deals and evidently for great storytelling.

Readers are treated to a fascinating story of the life of a mover and shaker who was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth.  In fact, it sounds like, at first, there were very few spoons in his house. But, the original WWW grew up during the depression when times were hard and people had to make ends meet however they could.

Mr. Wilson tells of his time in government and his meeting with multiple presidents of the United States, as well as other fascinating characters.

We find it to be a welcomed change from many memoirs we read, and there have been many, that Welcome doesn’t sugarcoat his mistakes.  Where he made a mistake, he tells us. This is a great way to learn.

As a point of disclosures to the readers of our blogs: As our readers know, we are very Conservative,  Fundamental Christians. That being said, Mr. Wilson discusses the opinion of himself and his wife on abortion.  We do not agree with his stance nor do many of our readers. We do not think that influenced this review in any way.

Always Welcome is a very fascinating book and is one that should probably be read by anyone in business, politics, academie, or who is just plan interested in history.  We award it all five stars and $1.12 postage due.

Gulag 401(k): Tales of a Modern Prisoner by Richard A. Marin ISBN: 978-1-4834-7876-0

The category listed on the back of Gulag 401(k): Tales of a Modern Prisoner by Richard A. Marin is fiction.  I am not at all sure that is correct.

The back of the book states “In this book, the author recalls his career and explores how to afford retirement…” I am not sure all of that is entirely accurate either.

Readers really aren’t given any significant investing for retirement information.  However, readers are treated to an inside look at the life of the author. This look does not appear to be fiction.  Who could make this stuff up?

We live in a completely different world from the author.  Marin does not see a $35 parking ticket as a significant expense, whereas we will drive out of our way to keep from having to pay a $1 toll on the toll road in Houston.  For us, $35 is 3% of our monthly income.

We really would love to read more of Marin’s writing, especially a little more detailed look inside Bear Stearns and Bankers Trust.

Five Star Review

We give Gulag 401(k): Tales of a Modern Prisoner all five stars.  It is an extremely well-written story that takes us through the author’s very interesting career. We follow Marin from his first day at work on his first job at Bankers Trust to his time as a teacher at a university, all the way through to his planned retirement.

One can learn a lot about the financial world. Marin does a better job at describing the financial meltdown at Bear Stearns than many of the books we have read that were written to specifically address that particular era in American history.

We would love to read a book that was a compilation of  this author’s in-the-trenches stories of big business and big finance.

Yes, the back of this book is a little misleading. However, readers will not be disappointed.  Readers will be entertained and they just might learn a little bit about preparing for retirement through the eyes of someone who has blazed a trail ahead of us. You should order your copy of Gulag 401(k): Tales of a Modern Prisoner by Richard A. Marin today.  Maybe give one to a friend.
